A Finely Carved Late 19th Century Black Forest Linden Wood Cow, Switzerland, by Ed.Binder & Cie.
A superbly carved and naturalistic figure of a cow, depicted standing calmly on a carved naturalistic base. The detailed modelling of the face and the finely textured fur are characteristic of the exceptional craftsmanship for which the Brienz region of Switzerland became renowned.
The village of Brienz, nestled in the Swiss Alps, was the centre of production for these highly realistic carvings of farm and domestic animals, particularly cows, which held a central place in Swiss rural life. Fashioned from a single piece of linden (lime) wood, such carvings were celebrated for their lifelike portrayal of fur, feathers, and anatomy, and remain some of the most recognisable examples of Black Forest carving.
Among the most famous carvers of the region was Ed.Binder & Cie, the Huggler family, Albert Schilde inc. This incredible example is by Ed.Binder & Cie. Any of he above makers works is widely regarded as the finest in Brienz carving.
The carving is in excellent condition, with just minor losses from each horn; otherwise, it is in superb condition for its age and would make a fine addition to any collection. It has the most wonderful, rich patina. Makers marks to the base of Ed.Binder and Cie along with some feing writing in pencil A rare piece suitable for the finest of collections.
