Hannah Barlow for Doulton Lambeth – 44cm Sgraffito Vase, c.1890

An impressive and finely decorated Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase by Hannah Barlow, dating to circa 1890. Possibly restored. The vase features exceptional sgraffito decoration depicting horses in a pastoral field, executed with remarkable skill and movement. Multiple horses are shown in varied poses, demonstrating Barlow’s renowned mastery of animal subjects.

The piece is monogrammed to the base, confirming authorship. The sgraffito work is of particularly high quality, with crisp line work and strong narrative detail throughout the vase.

Condition:

Overall, very good condition. There is a glaze run from the shoulder, consistent with the firing process, but no cracks or chips are noted. A highly attractive and imposing vase. It has been suggested that this has been repaired at the neck-shoulder junction, but this is not apparent. I have included photos of the area from four angles, and I see no evidence. However, the contributor indicated it was sold at auction, and I have not found any details of damage or restoration. In the interest of not misleading, I will sell this as restored and have priced it accordingly. Please request additional photos if helpful.

Dimensions:

Height: 44 cm

Notes:

Hannah Barlow (1851–1916) was one of the most celebrated decorators at Doulton Lambeth, especially admired for her lively and naturalistic animal scenes. Large-scale vases of this quality and subject matter are increasingly sought after by collectors of Arts & Crafts and Doulton Lambeth ceramics.

A striking and highly decorative example, well-suited to both serious collectors and refined interior display.
