19th-century KPM Berlin porcelain plaque, titled 'Gute Nacht' (Good Night), painted with a young girl holding a chamber stick and illuminated by the candlelight, impressed KPM marks verso, titled and inscribed in pencil, in plush frame, plaque H23cm W16cm, overall H34cm W26.5cm.
This is a beautiful nineteenth-century German KPM porcelain plaque featuring the highly collectible motif commonly titled "Gute Nacht" ("Good Night").
The painting depicts a young beauty illuminating her face with a single chamber stick candle while shielding the flame with her hand. This specific scene is a porcelain adaptation based on a famous 19th-century canvas by the German genre artist Georg Hom (1838–1911).
The back mark photograph confirms the authentic production details of the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur (KPM) in Berlin:
The markings impressed into the raw porcelain paste tell the story of how the blank panel was manufactured:
• The "H" Mark: The cleanly stamped capital letter "H" visible near the centre is a factory size or shape code used by the KPM technicians to manage kiln configurations and matching frames.
• The Incised Fraction/Numbers: The incised numbers (like the b or numbers nearby) indicate internal production batch codes, date markers, or dimensions.
• The KPM Sceptre (Partially visible/obscured): The circular indentations and blurred texturing near the numbers correspond to where the hallmark-impressed KPM sceptre mark sits. It is very common for these to be partially faint or obscured by plaster/glue residue left behind from when the plaque was originally mounted into its gilded wooden frame.
