This piece depicts "Mignon" holding a tambourine, standing against a stone wall overgrown with trailing ivy. Like your first piece, this composition is also an exquisite porcelain adaptation based on a famous 19th-century canvas by the German genre artist Georg Hom (1838–1911). Hom originally exhibited the painting in Berlin in 1880, capturing the melancholic, mysterious character from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's literature.
Here is what the markings on the reverse confirm about the mysterious artist F. Kohle:
🔍 Unmasking the Marks: "K.P.M" and the Artist
• The Definitive Factory Stamp: In the close-up of the back, the clear, uppercase "K.P.M." textile mark is cleanly stamped directly into the porcelain paste above an impressed lowercase letter "h". This confirms beyond any doubt that the base blank is an authentic, highest-quality panel manufactured by the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur in Berlin.
• The "F. Kohle." Signature: The crisp, hand-painted brown signature "F. Kohle" on the corner of the plaque reveals the exact spelling of the artist's name. In the 19th century, KPM Berlin frequently sold unpainted porcelain blanks to highly elite, independent porcelain-painting studios (often referred to as Hausmaler or decorating houses) located in major artistic hubs such as Dresden and Munich. F. Kohle was a masterful porcelain miniature decorator working within one of these independent German studios, specialising in recreating Georg Hom's popular romantic genre figures with meticulous fidelity.
This is one of two rare KPM plaques we are currently offering. Look out for the other.
